How do you use Twitter to grow your biz?
This post is dedicated to @angiedelong and other professionals who dabble in Twitter but need some clarification.
Twitter is a social network, like Facebook, but everything on Twitter is 100% public, 100% of the time. This makes it very useful for virtual networking. To participate on Twitter, you post short messages of up to 140 characters. Some people compare these to Facebook status updates, but that's not strictly true--you can use messages to broadcast all sorts of useless, irrelevant, useful, relevant information. My messages are a mix of personal comments, responses to people I find who could use help with bookkeeping or Quickbooks, and links to things I think are interesting. Disclaimer: this guide is not intended to be exhaustive. There is a lot about Twitter that I don't know, either--I'd just like to give our clients and readers a place to start. Twitter glossary: @ is the symbol used to denote a person's name or pseudonym. Mine is @bkydbookkeeper. If you respond to a person, you begin your tweet with their @name, and it will show up on their twitter account as a message to them. RT: when a tweet begins with "RT", that means it's a forward of someone else's message. An RT also should include a @ reference to the source. It's a way of sharing something you think is interesting or useful, or helping someone by forwarding their request for help. DM: Okay, not everything is public on Twitter. DM stands for "direct message" and gives you a way to, say, send someone your phone number without broadcasting it to the world. You are still limited to 140 characters and can only DM people who follow you. # is a hashtag. This is a way of marking tweets about specific topics. For example, when we went to the Community Foundation of Utah event, we were told at the beginning that the marker we should use is #cfu. On twitter.com, you can see a list of "trending topics"--what people are talking about most on Twitter. There are some third-party applications that can help you navigate twitter. These download your tweets, notify you when you get a reply or message, allow you to monitor topics of interest, and let you sort the people you follow into groups. I personally use TweetDeck, which simplifies my life. Happy tweeting!

I like the power of leveraging relationships across many different twitter groups, very effective. Thanks for the post!

The important thing I think is to serve as a resource and be engaged in your community. I like to share info on behalf of organizations and non profits who still use listservs and newsgroups and do not have a strong online presence or a social marketing presence but offer tremendous workshops, fundraisers and other events.
@teenbizcoach
Thanks for the information. What I would like to know is how to attract more followers? Reall followers, not the I will follow you if you follow me - then drop off your group in a week.
Hello everyone
I've found twitter helps increase traffic to my blog and website when I've posted links. I've met so many interesting and helpful people on twitter. If I wake up during the night, I find myself checking to see what's on twitter. I even got suggestions to get back to sleep. :) I read an article by Guy Kawasaki this morning on the AlwaysOn network about how he finds twitter to be a valuable marketing tool. It inspired me to write a blog post about it. Everybody seems to be talking about twitter! http://ezinearticles.com/?Enzyte-Review---Do-Free-Enzyte-Male-Enhancement-Pills-Works?&id=3486405
Shonika made a very valuable point. Becoming a valuable resource to your community is ideal with Twitter or any other social network. I believe that engaging in a positive and valuable exchange of dialogue is the source of business success with twitter. I'd love to hear more ideas.

When I started out on Twitter—back as PR Manager for a company and before my own biz—I bought this book: Twitter Power by Joel Comm....it is all you need to know everything and what makes a great post, etc.
Are there any folks out there who know and love all these social networks that would be interested in being a ghost writer? I would love to get in on all the social sites, etc. to promote my business, but I swear it's like learning a second language!

Twitter is a valuable resource that can used to help you understand your customers much better than many other sources. It's free market research at its best! You can search for your customers and find out what their interests are and what they're talking about to bring value to their circle.

Twitter is not a magic wand. A lot of people think that merely being present on twitter will get them more business. We recently published a research paper, "The Dell Twitter Success Story" where we documented what and how Dell did to achieve over 6.5 million dollars in sales through twitter.
It's important for you to know that twitter is just a place where 75 million people are making conversations with each other. As a business, you will need to find people who will be interested in your products and then spend time connecting with them before they will make any contributions to your business growth. Dell started their twitter presence in 2007 and spent 2 years just listening to and participating in conversations about their products. It was only in 2009 - that they started giving out exclusive discounts through DellOutlet. In 10 months, they generated 6.5 million dollars in sales through twitter. Any business should follow 3 basic steps for a successful twitter strategy: 1 - Listen 2 - Participate 3 - Promote Happy tweeting! I don't know where you might hire someone that can do this for you but what I did was purchase this program that basically teaches you a number of ways to market online. The program comes with access to their website which includes some very valuable tools such as reporting, autoresponder, and tracking.
