Are trade shows perceived to be less valuable as a marketing tool?

Trade shows can be effective but when you examine ROI in comparision with other marketing tactics they may not be the most effective marketing expenditure. I'm considering decreasing the number we plan on doing per year in favor of SEO.

How do other online businesses factor trade show promotion in their marketing planning? Do you see more companies opting out of trade shows? What are they doing instead?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Great Topic Linda,

I think that the right combination of the right targeted trade show and right SEO strategy can work together. Not just any trade show or any SEO campaign. It boils down to understanding who and where your customers are. Conduct surveys at your customer contacts and understand them. Are they online? Do they attend trade shows? I think they do both. Depending on the trade show and depending on their needs.

I don't see companies opting out of trade shows but realizing that every trade show is not a good trade show. It's pinpointing who and where your customers are. They aren't everywhere. There are more companies venturing online, yes, which is great. This provides a means to reach customers while attending the trade show to serve 2 birds with one dish. It still has to be pinpointed and attentive to your customers. With a performance driven strategy based on tangible results you can incorporate the best of both worlds.

I agree with Will on trade shows. I think trade shows reach a good deal of people, but it has to be a great trade show. Depending upon an event, they can be payoffs as well in reaching a mass amount of people. Then again, it depends upon the event, and whether viral marketing techniques will apply.

An event that invites bloggers and twitter users to an event to report news, as it is happening is the new marketing rage. This potentially has the power to reach literally millions of people worldwide.
