Are you seeing signs of recovery?
With reports out this week saying that small businesses are showing signs of rebounding from the recession, are things picking back up for you? Are you seeing signs of life?

Question of the Week
I own and operate a payroll firm that specializes in small business payroll and have seen a few trends from my business...
I have noticed more of my clients (more than normal) hire additional support staff. This has been on average of one to three new part time employees. None of my clients have reduced their staff counts since last Spring; a great sign. Secondly, people are looking for deals in any shape or form. I have clients that want to save $5.00 and get more services than what they had before. Most new business/clients have been a result of deal shoppers. So I think it goes without saying business owners are still being careful with the funds they have, something that may stay with us all even as the economy gets back on track. So yes, I think there are small signs here and there that a recovery is happening but at a slow pace.
Are you really a doctor ? i don't know that you are doctor ? can i ask u some question if u don't mind?

Great topic. This is the hot topic in all board rooms across the world.
Yes. I see signs of recovery. I see increasing creativity. The increasing partnerships between city, state, federal, non-profits and private industry are developing strong results. Problem solvers will shine during this time. Those that run away from problems will continue to struggle. I see the excitement in the eyes of those that see the light at the end of the tunnel and aren't afraid of the turbalence of getting there. Good luck entrepreneurs!! I've seen it since Aug. 09. The phone has been steadily ringing with clients that are going to spend money. Wheter it's with me or another company, they are still going to spend. Being in the mid to high end custom landscape design market, our average estimate is around $20K. Not exactly chump change, except for Will. When they can't get the money for their homes like they once could, it keeps them in the same place, spending on their own yard. However, we have to stick to our pricing strategies and can't let the client dictate what they weant to spend. I find myself trying to educate the customer on value and quality much more these days than I ever used to.
Now we need to get the housing market back on track. Recovery coming, just going to take some time.
I must be the only person who over the last 3yrs have not seen or heard of any of my friends & acqaintances being affected by this recession. HOWEVER over the last 6mths i have seen lots of people losing jobs homes etc, as an example i do multi let & so out of say 30 tenants ALL of whom where working & always have been, they are now all losing there jobs. So where i had 100% employed i now only have about 10% employed, as another example i am now sitting waiting for a call from my husband who does security at the airport (not really a place to make cut backs) BUT it looks like he may be made redundant. So basicaly the only time ive seen a problem has been when the recession is meant to be over.
All of that said i can see LOADS of opportunities for people to earn money, in fact my head is exploding with ideas for other people to do & have been helping others very succesfuly to take there OWN TALENT whatever that may be & GO FOR IT! If anyone wants to talk to me & throw some ideas around please feel free to email me sharonunderwood@googlemail.com If i can help i will............
I have a small business that is tied to the construction trade. We do Air Test & Balance for commercial buildings. We started to see business slow down last summer and it hasn't come up yet. We know of several clients in the Air Conditioning trade that have either gone out of business or laid off almost all their employees. One of the things that are contributing to this mess is that their lines of credit at the bank have been frozen or they can't borrow money to help with overhead. It takes time to get paid for jobs and when you don't have the funds to pay employees while you wait for your accounts payable funds to come in, it makes it hard to keep the doors open. It looks like it is a long road ahead.
Excellent topic.
I have a small business that has focused on quantitative methods for financial trading and risk management. My main clients had been big banks and investment houses until Bear Sterns fell in March 2008, but have shifted to helping small businesses in doing analysis, software development or whatever they need. That was a good move as I still find getting projects with the bigger companies a bureaucratic nightmare, but there are so many useful projects to help smaller companies. The business picked up last summer from June 2009 but then slowed down again around Jan 2010. I am hoping that I will be able to expand over the spring and even hire some junior consultants as there are so many talented people out there without work and looking for any opportunity. Everyone seems to be putting on a brave face but when you speak to people everyone is suffering in some way or knows someone who is. I have found most of my projects over the last two years directly by networking, though more likely by chatting with someone in a coffee shop but also online as well. Good luck in all your entrepreneurial ventures.
Our organization, www.AllAmericanHarleyParts.com, is showing great growth despite the troubled economy. I think the recession has helped our company in that consumers see the importance of supporting AMERICAN businesses and not shipping our dollars overseas.
All American Harley Parts only sells products that are made in the USA by manufacturers that make the best parts available for Harley Davidson motorcycles. "I'm proud to be an American. Where at least I know I'm free, and I won't forget the men who died that gave that right to me." ~ Lee Greenwood
