Do you need a formal education to be successful?

our parents tell us to go to school for a good education, so you can get a good job. but what about the Billionaires who never went or dropped out? Are they just a select few or can everyone do that?

after reading a book on bootstrapping your business i think that if you have the drive...you can be a successful entrepreneur too. what do you think?

Hey, Jayben
I've been in business for some 30 years now and I've had the priviledge of working with some quietly successful private businesses. ...and you know what I've learnt about all these businesses? A tertiary education or even a post graduate education was not their key to success. It's clear that the common characteristic for these very ordinary people is persistence, determination and a complete belief in themselves. Yes, some are highly qualified and others finished in middle school.
I think a tertiary education does help get one's foot in the door for the excellent training that's provided by established businesses. This is the opportunity to learn how "the other guy's" done it. So, yes, do get the education but don't rely on it for your business success.

All the best for your future.

Warmest

I don't think education makes you a successful entrepreneur. I think other things come into play and qualities that cannot be taught in school. There have been many entrepreneurs that I have meant who have not studied, but have been successful otherwise, because of their strong desire and drive to push forward.

I'm not saying don't get an education or go to college, I'm just saying that if you want to be successful you will be successful so keep pushing on. I'm here to support anyone with that drive to succeed.

You just need SALES! ... and I am still looking for a sales person or partner. C'mon... I already put up the quarter million to build the business. I just need a closer. You would think I was asking for money or something : ).

Education can be a good tool but its nothing without ambition, determination, and ability to learn adapt and grow. Education simply gives one knowledge assuming they have the ability to absorb it but that knowledge is worthless without wisdom and understanding. I do not believe the most important traits of success can be taught in a classroom are a book but must be forged in experience.

In short I was say never to turn down knowledge are withstand correction but success comes from works and perseverance not classroom credits.

The answer to your question is more relative to your definition of success. Some people enjoy the idea of going to college and working their way up the corporate ladder to a high position. That might be their idea of success. Others may envision coming up with a great idea and building a business. That might be another interpretation of success. Whatever your interpretation is, I will say college is a great way to build and establish some good resources for starting your own business.

I feel that the networking aspects and connections you can gain from people you meet at a university can greatly benefit you. Especially if you're going to a top business school where you might be rubbing shoulders with the future execs of some very large company's.

That being said, its not a necessary step... but its nice to have a decent salary to fund your new business.

A good educational qualification might or might not help you in becoming a good businessman but it certainly makes the journey easier in the sense that the educational background provides some kind of credibilty to a person. His point of few might be easier to accept than a lesser qualified person. People tend to take you more seriously if you have a good educational background. But this is just in the initial stages of the business. If one has a good business acumen and a desire to excell then there is no stopping for you,

Holding degrees/diplomas are not of much use. The only thing that makes an entrepreneur is the way he/she utilizes the talent and resources at hand!

Personally, I never saw a college from inside. It was just the deep urge to succeed and experiences that brought me to this height. And this is why I try to help aspiring entrepreneurs in whatever way I can.

I would recommend the following case study to further understand the role of education in business. Even Prince Charles had to take an appointment with this team that has almost illiterate staff. They are called upon by business schools to offer lectures on how to achieve Six Sigma through better business management. Just check out this case study: http://bit.ly/LqWhf
