Nina Liang De Bock
Business Owner

What would be the best way for me to start my business?

I live in Utah and I plan to start a business in food industry because that's where my passion is and I have people behind me who support me. I specialize in European snack and dessert. I am eager to put my foot down and start selling my products; however, Utah is not a very good place for entrepreneur like me who is not afraid of trying new different thing. I am thinking about doing my business in California or Colorado but I am just confused by what I need to do to be able to live in Utah but doing the business in other states. The reason why I still choose to live in Utah is because of the living cost that is cheap and I just barely start my business. I do not have any connections here in Utah whatsoever and I am not interested to stay in Utah any longer.
I appreciate every tips and suggestions.

Hi Nina,

I don't have any experience in the food industry, but I've been researching on opening up a restaurant/catering service. The economy has made the industry somewhat appealing, especially considering I'm on the east coast in NY and costs to start up a food business are low compared to 10 years ago since people are choosing to be thrifty rather than splurge. Anyways, I have a couple ideas that might be relevant to you. However it would help to get a better idea of what your plans are. Feel free to message me and we can talk further.

Good question. You have a tangible product that you want to market soley out of state. Have you considered a joint venture or partnership idea with someone located in the state you want to do business in? That way you have a storefront with "representation" at your market site.

Unless you are setting up an online store solely, I think you need to move.

Congratulations on your idea, it sounds like it would attract many customers. It is important not to place barriers on your business before you start. You already live in Utah and it sounds like money is tight in your case. Best is to check out what is already in you locale. Check, Provo, Salt Lake City, if your food is unique you will most likely get enough customers to make a profit. Remember that people are people no matter where they live and they all eat. If you serve popular pet animals or pests for your meals then yes I could see a problem with that, but I highly doubt you will. Also remember that LA and NYC are super crowded with places like that and your competition will be very high. I suggest you look closely at doing a market research on the places you are considering.

Hi Nina-
I feel that in a big town there is always room to start a speciatly business but I dont know much about Utah. In New York people are selling food on speciatly trucks which might be abother way to distibute your desserts without the overhead of rent. You can also have a special order business for parties, etc. Good luck!
