Attempting to start a Videography Service/Equipment Sales Business

I recently began taking Broadcast Production and Engineering courses at Hocking College in Nelsonville, OH. After finishing the Field Production and Broadcast Systems courses I realized just how good at this stuff I was. As a part of my required cirriculum I had to take Small Business Management I, and after the 6th week of class, I had an idea. The idea was simple: I'm pretty good at this Videography stuff and I know how to do professional level work, so why don't I start my own Videography business? Well, I started researching and putting together things from my Business class. After doing some Market Analysis, I realized that there is a huge market for this kind of stuff. The problem I came across was that I needed a competitive advantage over them. So, I started looking for ways to become an Authorized Retailer for Canon, Sony, and Hewlett-Packard. Unfortunaltey, I have been hugely unsuccessful with this side of my research. I know there are ways to do it, and I know it should be easy to find, but I'm thinking that maybe with all the other stuff I'm worrying about with the startup process that I may just be overlooking it. Could anyone help me out here.

You are doing just fine. It seems you are covering the steps that are required research wise. If you are serious in starting a business in videography service/ equipment sales business, then you should work in this industry so you can learn the practical nuances of it. Remember this step will be strategical and once you have gathered the practical experience you need, then you should have already broadened your contacts and views on what is exactly feasible and profitable out there. With experience you will have credibility and intuition, both of which are a must for a successful business. It looks like you interest is very broad, videography services is one market and the other is equipment sales, I know they can be eventually combined, but you should start out focused on one or the other, it is a common mistake to try to tackle all at once so just focus on one service, in one market segment, with a specific specialty. You will eventually grow the business and add additional services to additional markets. Good luck
