Hi Alanna,
Fashion apparel, retail boutique, etc. - this is a very competitive and market sensitive business. This industry is difficult even in good times. With that said, here is my response: Continue to do your research and collect as much information as you can. Can you design your own apparel or are you dependent upon manufacturers? If you're a designer, you have a shot at being successful. If you must depend on manufacturers I would wait until the economy makes a full recovery before launching. Based on your research I would first do the following: Define your customer, the benefit you expect to deliver and how you expect to deliver it (boutique). Critical - know who your customers are! Second, develop a business model that clearly defines your business; identify and evaluate your competition. A competition grid is very useful for this type of business. Understand why your potential customers buy where they do. Third, develop a marketing/sales plan that focuses on well-defined strategies and supporting tactics to execute your model. Position yourself to get your business off to a fast start. Set your goals and stick to your plan. Modify when it becomes evident that certain strategies are not working. Lastly, develop a finacial plan that connects with your model. Operate your business by the numbers making changes when necessary. Please keep me posted on your journey and feel free to contact me when needed. Tommy Jaye P.S. If it's possible to purchase an existing boutique, consider that option before doing a startup - you'll save yourself a lot of work and money.

Tommy Jaye,
I am a designer but attending school in the fall to perfect my skills, so i am going to hold off on that until i feel comfortable with selling my clothes. I figured the best way to go selling other designer clothes. Will continue to do my research. Thank you Tommy and will keep you posted:)
You can try creating an online shop (for free) through either Shopit.com or Etsy.com until you get a serious clientele.
Since you r in school, you could probably tie up with your classmates and sell their stuff to start with. You can always graduate to a proper E com site when you r ready. Good luck, Mukund
