Professional Background
Monty Roach has been standing sideways riding snowboards, surfboards, skateboards and wakeboards for all of his life. As a grom living in Salinas, CA the streets were basically a concrete jungle for skateboarding. Monty honed his skills of balance and progression during this early time in his life. In the winter of 1985, Monty Roach purchased brand new a Burton Performer Woody snowboard.

From the side of the high school football stadium to some small hills of the Midwest is where he first learned to ride a snowboard. (Looking back, I knew snowboarding was going to take over my life.) And it did. Turning pro in the 1987-1988 winter season. First competing in the California State Snowboard Series winning half-pipe, slalom, giant slalom and mogul contests gave Monty a path for future contest competitions. This path eventually led to National touring competitions as well as International touring competitions. This was also a time when Monty did filming for video/movies. A short list of these video/movies that follow, The Western Front, New Kids on the Twock and Pocahontas are considered the pioneering of snowboarding and video/movie making.
During this time period in Monts life he always wanted to learn how to surf. So when summer came around and he was done traveling to Mt. Hood, Oregon for the summer snowboard camps he would relocate himself for a few months to the Monterey Bay. (I sure do love the magic the Monterey Bay has.) Mont’s good friend Kelly Sorenson, owner of On The Beach Surf Shop located in Monterey would hire Mont to work in his Salinas and Carmel surf shops he had at that time. This completely surrounded Monty with the surfing culture and what has become even more of a lifestyle for him. This of course led to Monty becoming quite an accomplished surfer, to the point where he was invited to crossover snowboarding and surfing competitions one that even led him to Australia. (Oh man, Down Under. That was one of my most memorable trips. Two weeks of surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding. Most trips do not include all 3 board sports, so I was super stoked.)
At present Monty Roach is competing mostly on his dirt bike. Over the last few years Mont has raced at his local tracks in Northern California. He really looks forward to May of each year when the AMA Motocross National comes to Hangtown. Monty has finished on the podium twice in the vet class. He is also part of the Monster Energy Crossover race that is held especially for crossover athletes. This invite only race is for crossover athletes from all sorts of other professional disciplines that ride motocross. (This event is so much fun. We have all sorts of guys on the line from different sports. It is a great time to see everyone and get a chance to catch up with one another.) Mont enjoys the adrenaline and the physical demand riding motocross has on one self and says it is a great way to stay in shape.
From 2006 Monty and his wife Blossom have traveled annually to Mainland Mexico. They both love the warm weather and Monty really enjoys surfing warm water in his boardshorts. During their 2008 trip to Manzanillo, Mont was surfing a fun beach break when the boardshort rash struck. He does not like to wear shorts under shorts he prefers Commando style. This is when he decided to do something about it. Monty says, (We now have the SurfSleeve.) He goes on… (I think it is just ridiculous. Some of these guys wear two pairs of shorts in warm water. Then get out of the water and change into a dry pair of boardshorts. Isn’t that why companies make quick dry boardies?) Case in point, (On my last trip to Mainland Mexico, I brought many samples of my patent pending product for some R&D. Not once did I suffer from any boardshort rash. I surfed pretty much every day for a month straight. On one of my first days that I got out of the surf, I went under a palapa, ordered a beer, slid off my SurfSleeve rashguards and laid them over the rail of my surfboard to dry out. After 30 minutes the waves were still firing and I pulled my SurfSleeve rashguards back on and paddled back out for more waves. Now that is keeping it simple! No towel, no extra pair of shorts. To me, that is a Surfer’s Paradise. It was fantastic.)
It seems Monty has found a new way of thinking in regards to boardie rash protection. With the birth of the SurfSleeve he has now produced an alternative choice to board short rash protection for warm water traveling surfers.
